Art and the ocean…
Hi! My name is Hannah Russell, and since I was small and eating sand, I’ve loved to draw and be in the ocean. I’m a self-taught artist whose first love has always been drawing people. Growing up swimming and surfing on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, I studied and worked in design for a few years, travelled, and ended up in the UK where I met a wonderful Brit who proposed to me in Cornwall. For the past 10 years, with the addition of a couple of kids, we’ve been back in Australia, living by the ocean on the beautiful Central Coast of New South Wales. So I am back by the ocean, and back to creating :)
I primarily love to draw in pencil and charcoal, but also enjoy pastel and dabbling in oils, acrylics and inks. When it comes to colour, I like a fresh colour palette, and as inspiration, a glimpse back to retro surf posters and Vogue illustrated covers from the early 1900s, as well as looking at a variety of past portrait artists such as Sargent, Holbein and Ambrose McEvoy. I aim to capture - that sparkle of life - the spirit of the person in a portrait.
Most of all I want to create art that celebrates of the joy and beauty of life and people.
